Flying High
I started doing aerial silk after seeing one of my FAVORITE people Annie Dike, of Have Wind Will Travel doing silk on her sailboat. I thought that that would be an awesome way to stay in shape when in a confined space. After one class at with Amanda, at Above Ground Aerial Arts, I was HOOKED! Of course, my instructor made it look so dang easy and it was NOT! It took me almost 5 months before I could even get off the ground. There was a whole lot of grunting and not much climbing in the beginning!
And in case you want MORE BACK STORY,
I have been a dancer, gymnast and even made it to a 3rd degree blackbelt in Taekwondo (about 10 years ago). All of those activities WRECKED by body and I needed Rotator Cuff Surgery to repair the torn ligaments in my left shoulder. So of course it makes perfect sense to beginning aerial silk just 4 months after my surgery by Dr Kevin Darr! He is an excellent orthopedic surgeon that really took into account my activity level and did everything he could to make sure I could do just about anything!
Dr Darr is also the doctor that performed my 2016 Total Hip Replacement (more evidence of Body Wrecking!). I sold my dance studio because I wasn’t sure if I could continue that strenuous line of work. Again, I was amazed at what a great job he did on my surgery and just 4 months after my THR, I was back doing SILKS! I couldn’t believe it myself!
I guess I have to thank my amazing parents for always making me believe I could do anything. Thanks, Mom and Dad!
I am truly blessed to have a human form that is still able to do what it does. Maybe a little slower, maybe taking more effort, but I am still kicking it!
